Support a greener globe

Plant a tree while you wait for your compensation

Myflightrefund.ca cooperates with Global Climate Institute and WeForest on tree planting in Ethiopia, Zambia and India. When you file a claim with us you therefore have the option of planting a tree at our expense.

Our collaboration with Global Climate Institute is part of a larger tree planting project. The purpose of the project is to plant new forest and re-establish existing forest areas in cooperation with local farmers in India, Ethiopia and Zambia. In addition to tree planting, our partners collaborate with the local community to find sustainable solutions to avoid deforestation and improve agricultural techniques. Conversion to bioenergy, honey production, installation of energy efficient stoves and establishment of local nurseries are some of the activities carried out in the countries.

Tree planting and the accompanying projects have many advantages for the local area: more farmers are given the opportunity to become more educated and have an extra income, biodiversity is increased, the risk of erosion is reduced and the water is retained in the soil and tree roots instead of evaporating. In addition, tree planting helps to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and thus combat global warming.

5 tips for more eco-friendly flights

There are many ways to support a greener globe: you can plant trees, buy local and seasonal produce, eat less meat, use less plastic and much more. However, one of the biggests CO2 culprits is air travel. Here are five tips to help make your journey a little more climate friendly.

  1. Choose direct flights
Aircrafts emit the most CO2 during take-off and landing. On direct flights you only have to take-off and land once, thus minimizing your carbon footprint compared to flights with stopovers.

  2. Choose biofue
More and more airlines are using biofuels on select routes. Keep yourself informed of this so you can choose the greenest airline for your next flight.

  3. Travel on economy class
First and business class holds fewer passengers due to the larger seats. Although it is tempting to choose the more comfortable seats, it is also those who use the most fuel per passenger. When traveling in economy class, you help to ensure more passengers per flight and thus a smaller carbon footprint per passenger.

  4. Travel light!
Limit your luggage: the heavier the aircraft, the higher the fuel consumption. Maybe you should reconsider if you really need everything in your luggage?

  5. Avoid water waste
Bottled water requires up to 2000 times more energy to produce than tap tap water. Consider bringing a reusable water bottle that you can fill up at the airport before departure - if the tap water is safe to drink!
